(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission this week discussed a storm water drainage issue at 4th and Navajo.
City Administrator Mike Nichols said Darrell Bauer, who lives at 401 Navajo, would like the city to install a drainage tube from Navajo to Pawnee in order to divert water that he feels is eroding the ditch in his front yard.
Nichols said he informed Bauer of an 80/20 grant he’s eligible for through the city to address the issue, but Bauer feels its a bigger problem than just his property and the city should pay for the entire cost.
Nichols discussed several different options to fix the drainage issue, if the city were to incur all costs.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm said in his opinion there are worst places in town, and it’s not causing any damage to Bauer’s property.
Mayor Crosby Gernon said he would like to see what the existing balances are in the storm sewer fund and what Grimm has planned for next year before making a decision.  He also asked Grimm to compile a list of other locations in town where residents would like to have ditches fixed so the commission can look at them.
