01/06/2015

(KAIR)--Live Well, Live Atchison, a healthy living initiative created by community leaders to promote healthy habits in the county has received $20,000 from the city of Atchison in order to help them further promote their projects.

The group's Chairman, Chris Taylor, presented the funding request to City Commissioners during their meeting Monday afternoon. He said the request is part of an fund raising effort to not only hire a full time Executive Director, but to give them some start up money for projects that would further the group's goals.

City Finance Director Becky Anderson says the request will be funded through the money the city receives from the state alcohol tax, though there are some restrictions on how it can be used. A Third of it has to go into the city's general fund, a third goes into the special alcohol fund, and a third goes into the special parks fund. Anderson says that “The money in the special alcohol fund have to be spent on something that is related to drug and alcohol awareness. So we thought that Live Well, Live Atchison...we could fund their request within those requirements because a lot of what they are going to be doing is programing related to teaching kids about underage drinking and encouraging people to have more healthy behaviors”.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the funding, with Commissioner Larry Purcell casting the lone no vote.
