Land Swap Approved for Falls City Water Well Project
01/07/2015

(KLZA)-- The Falls City Council has approved swapping approximately 21 acres the City owns south of Rulo near the water plant for about 12.9 acres where a new horizontal water well will be drilled for future water needs.

The land swap with Virgil and Joann Jones, Gary and Linda Jones and Richard Jones was approved during Monday night’s Council meeting.

Utility Superintendent Alan Romine said the City has approval from the Army Corps of Engineers Office in Omaha on the environmental aspect of the well project.  The City is still waiting on approval for the mechanical aspect of the project from the Corps of Engineers Office in Kansas City and once they decide, approval is needed locally from Drainage District #7.

The City would like to go out for bids for the work early this spring. The project includes underground electrical service to the well site and building an additional clear well at the water plant which will increase the water storage capacity at the plant by more than 100,000 gallons to over 250,000 gallons.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 2.3 – 2.6-million dollars.

The new well will be built above flood stage to avoid issues with a flooding Missouri River.  Most of the current wells are to be capped over the next several years leaving the City with the new well and three of the wells currently in service for a backup.

In related action the Council approved petitioning Richardson County Commissioners to allow the City to subdivide two tracts of land owned by the City east of the water treatment facility at Rulo.

Approval was also given to a request from Casey’s Retail Company to expand the dimensions on their liquor license to include their addition to their building in the 1200 block of Harlan Street.  The addition will be approximately 16 feet.
