(KAIR)--A historic Leavenworth County property has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Little Stranger Church and Cemetery is among six Kansas listings added to the National Registry on January 7th.
The wood-frame church was built in 1868 and is cited as the oldest wood-frame church in Kansas. The church's roots date back to a group of Farley, Missouri settlers who arrived in Leavenworth County in 1858. It closed its doors for good in 1919 due to a flu epidemic. It was again used as a meeting place for various organizations in 1929, and continued to be utilized for this purpose through the mid 20th century.
The cemetery includes more than 100 graves, and may have pre-dated the construction of the church.
The National Register recognizes properties of local, statewide, and national significance.
