(KNZA)-- Doniphan County is preparing for this summer’s chip-and-seal road projects.
The County Commission Monday accepted the lone bid submitted by Gary Servaes Enterprises, of rural Atchison, for the purchase of ½ inch chat for the 2015 chip-seal season in the amount of $13 a ton.
Road Superintendent Bob Edie said it cost about $12,000 to chip and seal one mile of road.
Discussion was held regarding the number of miles of roadway to chip and seal this year. County Clerk Peggy Franken said of the 81 miles of hard surfaced roads in the county, 40 ½ miles were budgeted to be chip and sealed this year in order get on an every other year rotation cycle.
Following a hearing drawing no public comment, the commission adopted a five-year Solid Waste Management Plan for the county as presented by Northeast Kansas Environmentalist and Solid Waste Coordinator Dennis Foster. The plan will be submitted to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
And Commission Chairman Terry Horner informed the Commission of a phone call from Atchison County Commission Chairman Jeff Schuele regarding the two counties entering into a cooperative agreement for the sharing of a county appraiser and economic development coordinator. It was the consensus of the Doniphan County Commission not to pursue the proposal at this time.
