(KAIR)--Officials with the Bank of Atchison have found a pair of counterfeit $5 bills in their system.
Bank manager Cheryl Lanter says employees with the Union State Bank in Horton discovered the bills after a fund transfer from the Bank of Atchison.
Lanter says the bills, which were smaller and darker in color than normal currency, were most likely unknowingly deposited by a local business. However, it is difficult to determine the business or the exact time the deposit was made.
Police Chief Mike Wilson calls such cases in the local area a rare occurrence. He says “we have had several cases where counterfeit bills were brought to the city with the purpose of laundering them through various convenience stores and other businesses. And then you have the periodic ones that just show up in the currency...those types of cases are kind of difficult because nobody intentionally passed them. They somehow made their way into the currency system. It's usually an isolated case. But if you combine those scenarios, you can count on your hand how many we have worked.”
Lanter says an email has been sent to all banks in the area, informing them of the counterfeit bills.
