(KNZA)--Despite a close count, Hiawatha City Commissioner Steffen Shamburg is named as the city’s new mayor.
Following a canvass of ballots and counting of provisional ballots at Monday's Brown County Commission meeting, Shamburg defeated follow commissioner Bill Collins by only a two-vote margin—377 to 375. Unofficial results following last Tuesday’s election had Shamburg defeating Collins by a three-vote margin.
Thirty of the thirty-five provisional ballots cast in last Tuesday’s election were counted, giving Shamburg six additional votes and Collins, five.
County Clerk Debbie Parker says Collins can request a hand recount of the ballots. If a recount is requested, he would have to pay a deposit to cover the cost of the recount.
Meanwhile, two other mayoral races remain tied, with the leader for Reserve and Morrill not yet determined. Incumbent Reserve Mayor Janice Sanders and challenger Brandon Ruch each received 13 votes. In the race for Morrill Mayor, where no one filed for the office, Daniel Halstead and Roger Price each received 8 write-in votes.
Parker says a coin flip will be held at next Monday’s County Commission meeting to determine the winner’s in the two races.
