Auburn School Board Approves Pet Therapy
07/14/2015

(KLZA)-- Nemaha County Hospital Director of Nursing Kermit Moore met with the Auburn Board of Education Monday evening to present information to the Board about starting a Pet Therapy program in the district.

Moore said there is a dog brought to the hospital that has had very positive results in terms of patient care.  In a school setting kids could read to the dog and it could be utilized in the Life Skills classroom. The Board approved some guidelines for the program, which they hope to utilize beginning this fall.

Handlers have to pass a background check, the dog and handler have to be trained. The training cost is estimated at approximately $200 which would be the responsibility of the handler. The handler could be a teacher or someone from the public who just brings the dog to school on a regular basis.

In other action, the Auburn Board of Education approved a new pay rate for substitute teachers for the 2015-16 school year at $125 per day. That is a $10 increase from last year.

The low bid for bread for the school district for next year was submitted by Pan-O-Gold Bread out of Lavista.  Bimbo Bakeries has been the only company in recent years to submit a bid, this year two were submitted. The bid was awarded to Pan-O-Gold Bread.

The cost for the Drivers Ed program for next year will be cut by $50 to $200. Some fees were approved for the FFA program now that it has been established.

Student handbooks were approved and a Hazard Mitigation Plan resolution was also adopted.
