(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission held a short special meeting Tuesday evening, taking action on two items.
The Commission approved a pay request for Kansas City-based Amino Brothers Construction for the walking trial project in the amount of nearly $287,000.
Mayor Steffen Shamburg said the city is contractually obligated to make the payment even though the Commission has some concerns regarding the project. Shamburg said the project engineer is appear at the next commission meeting to give a progress update and address the concerns the commission has.
City Administrator Mike Nichols noted part of the contract calls for a 10 percent retainage at the end of the project, which isn’t released until the contractor fixes any issues identified during a project walkthrough. In addition, Nichols said there is a one year warranty during which the city still holds the contractors bond.
Also during the meeting, the Commission authorized Nichols to purchase two new air conditioning units for the Schuneman Addition at the Fisher Center to replace two units that have quit working.
