Horton Standoff Ends With Arrest

(KNZA)--A standoff in Horton that began Wednesday evening ended around seven hours later with the arrest of the suspect. 

Taken into custody is 34-year-old Desiderio C. Hernandez of Falls City who is believed to be responsible for an early Wednesday morning Falls City shooting that left one injured. 

Horton Police Chief John Calhoon says Hernandez was arrested just minutes after 2:00 Thursday morning, taken into custody on a Nebraska warrant for attempted first degree murder. The Nebraska State Patrol says Hernandez is being held in the Brown County Jail awating his return to Nebraska. 

Authorities launched a search for Hernandez Wednesday following the early morning shooting that sent 31-year-old Falls City resident Joseph Debella Jr. to the hospital with critical injuries. The Nebraska State Patrol reported Thursday morning that Debella remained in criticial condition at a Lincoln hospital.

The standoff Wednesday evening put the Horton community on high alert, with police sending out an emergency text message at 8:45 telling residents to stay inside their homes because a person was barricaded in a residence in the western part of the city. 

The standoff began earlier that evening and was overseen by numerous law enforcement agencies who assisted Horton Police, including the Brown County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
