(KAIR)--The Atchison County Sheriff's Department is warning residents about a scam being reported in the local area.
According to a post on the department's official Facebook page, the scam involves a potential victim receiving a phone call from someone claiming to work for “Sheriff's Dispatch.” The number 913-367-4323 appears on the would-be victim's caller id, but is apparently being spoofed with software that allows the number of another phone number to show up instead of the actual number from where the call is originating. The fake dispatcher then tells the potential victim that he or she has a warrant or unpaid fines.
If you receive such a call, please hang up and do not give out any information. The Sheriff’s Department does not take payments over the phone for fines or warrants, and the calls are an apparent attempt to gain fast cash, personal information, or both.
