Cover Crop Field Day Tour Planned
09/07/2015

A Nebraska Extension/NRCS Sponsored Cover Crop Field Day is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9th at the Ron Meyer Farm in western Nemaha County. The field day site is ¾ of a mile south of Highway 136 on 628 Avenue. Registration is at 9:30 with refreshments; followed by the program beginning at 10:00 a.m. Several individual cover crop species and cover crop mixes were planted in early August and are all up and growing and will be available for examination at the field day. Several topics will be covered at this field day. Mary Drewnoski, Beef Systems Specialist, with Nebraska Extension will discuss grazing cover crops for forage purposes. Chris Proctor, Extension Educator in Weed Science will address planning your herbicide program for cover crops. Paul Jasa, Extension Engineer with Nebraska Extension will discuss planting methods for cover crops and Humberto Blanco, UNL Soil Scientist will address soil physical properties and cover crops. Other topics discussed by NRCS representatives and Extension Educators include: water infiltration rates in soil, soil health, uses and potential benefits for different types of cover crops and NRCS Programs with Cover Crops and Soil Health. We hope to have cover crop industry people at the field day as well.

This field day is free to the public. Lunch will be served and following lunch, people will have the opportunity for closer evaluation of the cover crop plots and discussion with presenters and participants at the field day. While pre-registration isn’t required, it is encouraged for lunch and handout materials. To register contact Gary Lesoing at Nebraska Extension in Nemaha County at (402) 274-4755.
