(KMZA)--The Seneca City Council has approved a request by the city’s Housing Authority for a waiver of its payment in lieu of taxes.
The approval came following two votes at the Council’s meeting Wednesday evening.
A motion was initially made to not grant the waiver, however it was defeated on a 2-3 vote. Council members Alice Lackey and Mike Stallbaumer voted in favor of the motion, while Council members Ray Shinn, Steve Bennett and Jim Mitchell voted against it. Council member Bruce Hermesch was absent.
Then a motion was approved to grant the waiver on a 3-2 vote, with Lackey and Stallbaumer voting in opposition.
Mayor Joe Mitchell recommended the Council not approve the waiver, saying the Housing Authority should pay taxes like everyone else in Seneca.
The Council has granted the waiver for several years now. The amount of the payment in lieu of taxes is just over $14,000.
