Atchison To Annex Land
09/22/2015

(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission, during a meeting Monday afternoon, voted to annex two properties into the city limits.

City Manger Trey Cocking says one of the properties is County Property that includes the Shade Railroad building, and the annexation is part of a city plan. “That one had a consent agreement on it. If that property ever touched the city, then the city could annex it, so we are just trying to get some of that cleaned up, and really our focus is trying to get that U.S. 59 corridor cleaned up coming into town. That's kinda our focus over the next year is to get a lot of those properties in the city, and get some nuisance abatement started with that.”

The Armstrong Industrial Tract property was also annexed into the city.

Cocking says annexation of the Shade Railroad property was considered as soon as nine years ago. “In 2006, the previous owner consented to allowing the city to annex that property, so the County Commission was aware of that there was an annexation agreement on that property when they bought it...the previous annexation, earlier this year, which touched it when we annexed Full Moon Saloon into the city, and that brought the city to where it touched it, and then obviously we changed over City Attorneys, and now we are up and going on some of those annexations.”

The Armstrong Industrial Tract annexation passed on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Charlie Purdue casting the lone vote. Commissioners voted 3-2 for the Shade Railroad Building annexation, with Purdue and Commissioner Larry Purcell voting against it.
