(KAIR)--Atchison fire crews rushed to the scene of a fire at Amsted RPS Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported during the noon hour Monday, with the facility evacuated as fire crews battled the blaze.

Fire Chief Mike McDermed says that crews were notified prior to arriving on the scene, that heavy smoke was coming from the building, located on the western edge of Atchison, at 2604 Industrial Road. He says that “as the trucks were arriving, due to the windy conditions, there was not a lot of smoke visible until they got closer to the facility, and then once they got to the facility, then they could see that there was heavy smoke coming from several different areas of the building as far as their ventilators on top and some other exhaust equipment.”

McDermed adds that the main body of the fire was difficult to pinpoint after an initial inspection, due to heavy smoke conditions inside the facility. He says that “once the crews got geared up, they entered the building, worked their way around all the machinery there which makes it more difficult...found the area where some of the bulk of the fire was and extinguished it pretty quickly, then they saw a couple of other smaller areas that they were able to extinguish fairly quickly.”

Around 3:00, the fire was extinguished, but crews remained on the scene in the event of any flare ups.

No injuries are reported, McDermed says that an industrial accident likely caused the blaze.
