(KAIR)--The case of an Atchison man, accused of kidnapping his girlfriend's daughter, who died after a police pursuit that ended with an exchange of gunfire in Leavenworth, has been continued. 

Attorneys for 30-year-old Marcus McGowan requested a six week continuance Monday in order to finalize a possible plea agreement. A new court date has been set for December 10th.

McGowan is facing federal charges of kidnapping a child, discharging a firearm during the kidnapping, unlawfully possessing a firearm following a felony conviction, and unlawfully possessing a firearm following a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction 

Authorities allege McGowan kidnapped 5-year-old Cadence Harris from her Atchison home on July 18th of last year before driving from Kansas to Missouri, and then back into Kansas while being pursued by police. The pursuit ended when McGowan's SUV encountered road construction on Metropolitan Avenue in Leavenworth, where the gunfire occurred.

If convicted on all charges, McGowan faces life in prison, and a fine up to $750,000.
