Fire Battled At Atchison Sale Barn
10/26/2015

(KAIR)--Atchison fire crews responded to the scene of a fire at the Atchison Sale Barn Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Mike McDermed says a report of heavy smoke coming from the 2100 block of Main Street, came in just after 3:40. “When crews arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke, and some fire showing from a hay storage facility, which is similar to a pole barn just to the north of the sale barn facility itself. What they found there were several bales of hay that were on fire, most of them were smoldering, some of them had open flame, which was impinging on the rafters on the roof of the pole barn facility.”

McDermed says crews were able to suppress the majority of the fire quickly, but were on the scene for several hours, breaking up hay bales and putting out areas that were still smoldering. Fire crews also returned to the scene early Monday morning to extinguish several smolders that popped up overnight.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
