A Prescribed Burn Workshop is scheduled to take place in the Bingo Hall of the Golden Eagle Casino (1121 Goldfinch Rd., Horton, KS) on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. On-site registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the program starting at 9:00 and running until 2:00 p.m. Refreshments, a course workbook, lunch, and drawings for door prizes are all included within the $5.00 registration fee.
Used properly, fire can be a very cost effective and valuable land management tool. However, this tool is widely under-utilized because many landowners haven’t had the opportunity to hone their knowledge and gain the skills necessary to comfortably implement this practice. The workshop will focus on providing participants with the knowledge and understanding of how to implement prescribed burns as safely as possible, and how fire can be used to meet multiple land management objectives.
Covered topics will include: Burning for Wildlife Benefits; Regulations and Permits; Planning and Conducting a Burn; Designing Your Own Burn Plan; Burn Contractors; Reasons to Burn; Fire Behavior; Weather Issues; Equipment; Safety; Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Rules; and, Liability.
Anyone wishing to participate in this workshop will need to RSVP to Niki Tollefson, Brown County Conservation District Manager, by Friday, November 13th. She can be reached at: 785-742-3161 extension 1331 or email: lana.tollefson@ks.nacdnet.net
Sponsors of this event include: Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas; Kansas Forest Service; K-State Research and Extension; Brown County Conservation District; Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism; Quail Forever; Delaware WRAPS; Great Plains Fire Science Exchange; and USDA’s, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Services Agency.
