Poison Prevention Tips

(NRN)-- Many Nebraskans are launching into spring cleaning projects, which means all sorts of cleansers and chemicals may be available for young hands to grab. This is National Poison Prevention Week, and kids are a constant focus of prevention efforts.

The Nebraska Regional Poison Center gets about 40-thousand calls a year. Noble says the nature of the calls varies. Kids tend to get into cosmetics and personal care products and cleaners. For adults, medicines seem to be the biggest issue.

In recent years, more Nebraska kids are being poisoned by biting into laundry detergent pods. They've also been swallowing button-sized batteries and magnets.

You can make your home safer by posting the regional poison center's toll-free number by all telephones and also by saving it in your cell phone contact list. The number is 800-222-1222.

Other ideas to keep your home safer include making sure medicines are put away with lids on containers. Carbon monoxide detectors are also a good way to keep your home safer.
