Renovation is planned to an affordable senior housing apartments complex in Hiawatha.
The nonprofit community organization, Winter Center of Lawrence, plans to seek low-income housing tax credits through the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation to help finance the rehabilitation of the Pemberton Village Apartments located on North 1st Street.
The Hiawatha City Commission Monday approved a resolution supporting the tax credit application.
City Administrator Lynne Ladner said Winter Center is attempting to purchase the apartments and renovate them. Ladner said they want to bring the apartments back to their original status.
The first portion of the apartment complex was built in 1975 and the second portion in 1990.
The tax credit application is due Friday.
Winter Center also plans to seek other funding to rehabilitate the property.
In other business, the Hiawatha Police Department will be adding another vehicle to their fleet.
The commission approved the purchase of a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo from Hiawatha Ford at a cost of $16,900.
The vehicle has nearly 26,000 miles on it.
The purchase was approved on a 2-1 vote, with Commissioner Bill Collins voting no.
Commissioners Vickie Denton and Steffen Shamburg were absent from the meeting.
