Nebraska Senators Discuss Tax Relief Proposals
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Nebraska lawmakers are pitching a series of
tax relief proposals aimed at farm land, Social Security benefits
and owner-occupied homes.
The Legislature's Revenue Committee heard testimony Wednesday
from lawmakers, several of whom said their tax relief idea should
rank as the top priority this session.
One measure by Elk Creek Senator Lavon Heidemann would reduce
the valuation of farm land for school district taxation by 2
percent annually, over a 5-year period.
Another measure by Omaha Senator Jeremy Nordquist would exempt
Social Security benefits from Nebraska state taxes.
Omaha Senator Heath Mello urged the committee to advance his
proposal, which would give homeowners approximately $76 million in
property tax relief through an exemption on the first $8,000 in
value of their home.
