The Hiawatha School Board has approved the transfer of several teachers to open positions at the elementary school this fall.
Following a closed-door session Monday, the board approved the transfer of current kindergarten teacher Gretchen Oldham to the Title I reading position, open due to the retirement of Janice Riner.
Current second grade teacher Jennifer Pyle will transfer to the kindergarten position left vacant due to Oldham’s transfer.
Two current 1st grade teachers, Nicole Mathewson and Ellen Hill, will be transferred to two open second grade positions---one vacant due to Pyle’s transfer and the other due to the retirement of Jennifer DeForest.
Current 4th grade teacher Laura Coulter is being transferred to the math resource teaching position, open due to the retirement of Deb Smith.
And high school physical education teacher Amy Plattner will transfer to the elementary PE position left vacant due to the retirement of Ron Nichols.
There are still five teaching positions to fill at the elementary school along with three teaching positions at the high school.
In other business, the board gave Superintendent John Severin permission to advertise and hire a district computer tech to replace Rick Prohaska, who is retiring at the end of the current school year .
Severin was also given permission to advertise and hire an assistant girls softball coach. He said there will be about 24 girls out for the sport.
And the board approved having two play performances—a musical in the fall and drama production in the spring.
