Atchison Gets Community Garden Grant
04/26/2012

The City of Atchison has received a $5,000 grant from the Kansas Community Gardens Project, a joint initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation and K-State Research and Extension.

The grant will fund start-up costs for the new Atchison Community Garden, one of only 24 community garden projects in the state to receive this funding.

The mission of the statewide Kansas Community Gardens Project is to spread these benefits throughout Kansas through grant funding as well as information and support to help make garden projects successful community ventures.

Grant recipients were selected through a competitive application process, which drew interest from organizations and gardens throughout the state.

The Kansas Community Gardens Project is a three-year initiative, with this year’s recipients representing the first of more than 60 gardens that will eventually join the program.

The Atchison Community Garden is making its debut this spring, turning an underutilized public ball field into a blooming patch of fresh produce and flowers with individual plots tended by local gardeners.

The garden is located at Morrow Park, 901 Forest Avenue.
