BC Looks to Become More “Green”
09/12/2012

(KAIR) -- Benedictine College recently announced the kickoff of a three month in-depth evaluation that will identify potential energy-saving solutions that can be implemented across campus.

The evaluations will cover all 24 buildings that comprise over 660,000 square feet of space.

Benedictine is teaming with Energy Solutions Professionals, LLC of Overland Park, Kansas, to conduct the energy audit.

ESP specializes in identifying and installing energy conservation and facility improvement measures that save clients money and address deferred maintenance needs.

ESP plans to investigate certain key areas based on a preliminary analysis they conducted earlier this year. College representatives have also identified specific needs they would like to see addressed.

The goal in having the buildings audited is to identify and prioritize energy efficiency projects that will produce considerable energy savings and upgrades that will replace aging or problematic systems, all while reducing the College's carbon footprint.

In moving toward that goal, the college’s Ferrell Academic Center, completed in March 2012, was designed to meet environmental standards that make it the first new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building on a college campus in Kansas.

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system providing third-party verification that a building was designed and built to improve energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, indoor environmental quality, stewardship of resources and sensitivity to its impact.
