Atchison Historical Society to Celebrate 45 Years
10/22/2012

(KAIR) -- The return of suffragette Susan B. Anthony to Atchison County will highlight this year’s Annual Meeting & Program for the Atchison County Historical Society Tuesday evening.

This year’s event will also feature induction into the Roll of Honor – several long-time supporters of the organization and mark the 45th year of the Historical Society.

As part of the evening festivities the Historical Society will honor 12 supporters whose work has helped make the organization what it is now in its 45th year.

Current inductees include: Ladd Seaberg, Charlie Wagner, Ralph Martin (now living in Texas) and the Atchison Kiwanis Club. Also being inducted into the Roll of Honor are: Wilber Stocks, Vivian Crawford Lutz, Glenn Nichols, Rev. Roger Rumery, Claude Warner, Blanche Houston, Charles Spencer and John May.

Susan B. Anthony is portrayed by Ms. Jeanne Gehret, who is touring Kansas from the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum in Adams, Mass. In her costumed presentation “Failure is Impossible,” Gehret takes on the persona and costume of Susan B. Anthony eight years after Anthony voted (1880), giving background on the social conditions prompting Anthony’s fight for women’s rights, and stressing Anthony’s strong activism for abolition and temperance.

The Atchison County Historical Society Annual Meeting evening on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd will begin at 5 p.m. with a special Chamber after Hours with entertainment on the piano provided by Molly Porter. The Roll of Honor presentation will begin at 6 p.m. in the Museum. At 7 p.m. the Historical Society Annual Meeting will begin – including election of board and officers followed immediately by the Susan B. Anthony program.
