Atchison Hospital to Celebrate 100 Years Sunday
11/16/2012

(KAIR) -- On Sunday, the Atchison Hospital will be turning 100.

In the fall of 1912 a board was formed of Atchison businessmen and dedicated citizens with efforts to provide a much-needed medical facility.

A campaign began to raise the funds necessary to meet their goal.

A piece of land was chosen for the site of the hospital on the gentle rolling hills in the northeast part of the town. The total investment for the Hospital including the land, a three-story brick and concrete building, and equipment was $65,000.

By July 1913, the Hospital was opened and the first patient was admitted.

A major remodeling program at a cost of $2.5 million was finished in 1990 and included a new emergency room, radiology department, and intensive care unit.

In the Spring of 2002, a three-year project was completed which included a new circle drive and entrance with a covered drive-through at the front doors and additional parking on either side of the driveway.

Sunday’s anniversary will be celebrated by several events at the hospital from 1:30 to four in the main lobby.

Marketing and Development Director T.C. Roberts says the include living history displays.
