Atchison Army Storage Facility to Open for Business Leasing
05/15/2013

(KAIR) -- The U.S. Army Storage Facility located in and around the banks of the Missouri River will now be available for lease to businesses.

This comes after the U.S. Government sold the facility in late April to an investment group out of Springfield, Missouri.

That ownership group includes Coby Cullins, the new owner of the cave storage facility along Sherman Road in Atchison.

He will be in town this Friday offering tours of the facility to individuals interesting in locating their business in the caves.

The facility, being dubbed as the “MO-KAN Underground Business Park” is over 1.5 million square feet of improved underground space and 125 acres of surface ground.

It is located on the Missouri River and is rail-served.

In 1886, George W. Kerford began to quarry limestone from the large bluffs.

Initially, the company produced riprap for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, one of several railroads that traveled through the area.

During World War II, the U.S. Army used the caves as a secure food storage facility and later for tool storage during the Cold War before renovations to the facility occurred in 1952.

Individuals interested in scheduling a tour of the facility on Friday should contact the Community Development Office at 913-367-5560.
