06/21/2013

(KAIR) -- Thanks to some extra matching funds from County Commissioners, Atchison County will be able to host a formal event to demonstrate amateur radio and emergency communication this weekend.

Its part of a nationwide event that occurs the fourth weekend in June known as Amateur Radio Field Day, in which the functions of amateur radio and emergency communication is on display for 24 hours.

Communication Emergency Coordinator Ralph Peterson says the extra funding allowed the Emergency Management Department to purchase a mobile command center for the demonstration.

The event will run from one Saturday afternoon until one Sunday afternoon.

The demonstrations and tests are open to other ham radio operators and the general public and will take place at Peterson's residence at 7469 Greeley Road, located near Lancaster and Paradise Lake.
