Time For Flu Shots
10/01/2015

(NRN)-- As we turn the page from summer to fall it is time to start thinking about getting a flu shot. Alicia Fry is a medical epidemiologist, Influenza Division of the Centers for Disease Control and says flu season typically starts in November but there is no way to predict how severe it will be.

Fry says the flu takes a serious toll every year. She says the hospitalization rates for those age 65 and over was the highest ever since surveillance began in 2005 and 145 children reportedly died from the flu. The CDC recommends that everyone age six months and older gets vaccinated.

Fry says vaccines are now available, and it can take a few weeks until you have the best response to the flu vaccine. The sooner you get one the sooner you will be protected from a severe and sometimes deadly illness.

The CDC recommends everyone over the age of six months get a vaccination. The CDC also reminds everyone to "Take 3" actions to prevent getting the flu. One is to fight the flu with a vaccine. Two is to take every day preventative actions to reduce the spread of germs - in other words wash your hands often. Three is to use antiviral medicines to treat the flu, if prescribed.
