(KAIR) -- An early timetable has been set for the new Amelia Earhart Bridge to become four lanes.
As we reported last week, the remainder of the old bridge is scheduled to be demolished in late March or early April 2013.
Once the intersection tie-in work is finished and the old bridge is completely removed, the new AE Bridge will be opened to four lanes of traffic, sometime later this spring.
According to K-DOT, in the meantime, crews have removed approximately 424 feet of the old bridge.
Using a 75,000-lb. track excavator complete with hydraulic breaker (which actually breaks up the concrete) and a skid steer loader (which is removing the concrete rubble from the ground), crews removed the bridge deck first, followed by the existing piers.
Rubble from the bridge demolition is now being sorted and disposed of.
Metal pieces from the old bridge are being sent for recycling. For the next couple of months, crews will complete work on the tie-in portion of the project, including the addition of a new bridge pier.
