Firefighters Express Concern over Emergency Management Position
04/17/2013

(KAIR) -- Members of the Jefferson County Firefighter’s Association met with County Commissioners this week to express concern on the new status of the Emergency Management Director Position.

Last week, Daryl Chess was hired on a part-time basis as Emergency Management Director to replace outgoing Director Doug Schmitt.

The association asked Commissioners to keep the Emergency Management position as full-time due to the high demands the county has.

They cited it’s due to the county being bordered by metro area on three sides, a major railroad running through the county, three heavily traveled state highways, a large recreation facility, as well as several high pressure transmission gas lines and oil and gas wells.

The group feels a part-time employee cannot maintain education and training required and then be able to relay the knowledge back to each of the fire departments in the county.

Commissioners made no decision following the discussion.
