State Gives Atchison Co Wasteland Owners Relief

(KAIR) -- The majority of Atchison County property owners who earlier this year received wasteland valuations much higher than expected get good news.

The Property Valuation Division of the Kansas Department of Revenue has ordered county appraisers statewide to re-classify wasteland, placing it into an alternative category.

Atchison County Commissioner Mike Bodenhausen says this will give roughly 90 percent of land owners affected a much lower valuation. ( play audio )

The issue arose in recent months when affected property owners received their valuations, and were shocked to see they had jumped from $10 an acre to 11-hundred dollars an acre.
