Petition Seeks to Name Highway After Former Mound City Mayor
11/13/2013

(KTNC) - A petition circulating in Holt County seeks to name a northwest Missouri highway after a former Mayor of Mound City.
Holt County Presiding Commissioner Mark Sitherwood is leading the effort to rename U.S. Highway 159 from Interstate 29 west to the Missouri River in memory of David Duncan.
David Duncan passed away in 2009, while in the middle of his third term as mayor of Mound City.  Duncan also served on the MoDOT Transportation Advisory Committee, and Sitherwood says he was an early leader in the effort to build the new Missouri River Bridge at Rulo.  He says it was Duncan who brought the Tri-State Corridor Commission to Washington, D.C., to lobby for funding for the new bridge, which was completed this year.
Sitherwood says they had thought about trying to have at least a portion of the new bridge named after David Duncan.  But he says Nebraska officials were not keen to name the bridge after one person when so many were involved in its construction.
In order to rename the highway, Sitherwood says they first need to complete a petition with signatures from 100 Missouri residents.  The petition would go to the Department of Transportation and final approval would take an act of the Missouri Legislature.
Sitherwood says their collecting petition signatures quickly, and have received favorable response from area legislators to the idea.
