Flood Warnings Issued for Area Rivers
06/04/2014

(KTNC) -  Severe thunderstorms that rolled through the area Tuesday night dumped heavy rain and caused river levels to rise, leading the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings for several waterways.
A flood warning has been issued for the Missouri River at Brownville and at Rulo, affecting residents in Atchison and Holt Counties in Missouri and Nemaha and Richardson Counties in Nebraska.
The flood warning at Rulo is in effect from late Thursday night until Saturday afternoon. Minor flooding is forecast, as the river is expected to rise above flood stage by Friday morning and crest near 18.8 feet Friday evening before falling below flood stage late Saturday morning.
The flood stage at Rulo is 17 feet. The river stage was 9.2 feet Tuesday night.
The main impact will be flooding of agricultural lowland on the Missouri side of the river.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, has issued flood warnings for several rivers in Missouri and Kansas.
The warnings include for the Missouri River at St. Joseph, affecting Doniphan, Andrew and Buchanan Counties, and the Tarkio River at Fairfax, affecting Atchison and Holt Counties.
Moderate flooding is forecast along the Tarkio River, where the river is forecast to rise above the 17-foot flood stage by late Wednesday morning and continue to rise to near 21.6-feet by Wednesday evening. The river should fall below flood stage again by Thursday morning.
Officials caution to not try to drive through areas where water covers the road, as the water’s depth may be too great to allow a vehicle to safely pass. As little as six-inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and two-feet of water will carry most vehicles away.
