(KLZA)-- As recently reported, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development has awarded a $375,000 grant to the City of Humboldt to use toward the restoration of the historic Humboldt Auditorium.
Dennis Crispin, Chairman of the Friends of the Humboldt Auditorium, who are heading up the project says the grant will be a big boost to the renovation project. Crispin said the renovation actually begin in 2011 when new energy efficient and historically correct windows were installed. In 2014 a membane-type roof was put on the building. Crispin says the City of Humboldt, the Humboldt Community Foundation, Humboldt Lions Club and other private and civic donors have already helped with some of the initial improvements to the building.
The grant money and in-kind work will mean $750,000 worth of improvements can be made. The grant funds will also help cover the cots of all new electrical, plumbing and heating and air conditioning which the building has not had previously.
Plans call for the Humboldt Auditorium to meet Americans with Disabilities Standards. An elevator to the lower level is included in the plans. Currently the main floor has a large gym floor and a stage. Hopes are to use the lower level for public meeting rooms, a kitchen and a recital hall. The group hopes to receive more grant funds in the future and accomplish the work in three years.
The City of Humboldt is the sponsoring agent for the grant funds. The grant funds come from money contributed by six major convention centers in Nebraska as repayment for state support toward their establishment.
