A Brown County resident is being commended for doing the right thing when it comes to receiving unsolicited phone calls: give out no personal information(Play Audio :19 seconds)
That's Brown County Sheriff John Merchant who says the resident, this past weekend, reported that a phone call was received from a caller claiming to be a sales representative for a medical supply company.
The caller, attempting to talk the would be victim into purchasing medical equipment, stated that only a Medicare number was needed in order to receive the item for free.
The resident questioned the caller, who became agitated and hung up.
Merchant, following the report of the incident, contacted Medicare and was told the call was an apparent scam, and that Medicare numbers should never be given out to solicitors.
Merchant says anyone else who receives the call should contact his office, or notify the Medicare fraud hotline at 800-633-4227.
