Hiawatha receives Grant For Walking/Biking Trail

The city of Hiawatha has been awarded a $21,500 grant from the Topeka-based Sunflower Foundation for a proposed walking and biking trail.

City Administrator Lynne Ladner informed city commissioners this week of the grant award.

The commission authorized Mayor Crosby Gernon to sign the necessary documents accepting the grant.

Ladner says the city is also seeking other grants in order to make the project a reality.

The trail will connect key elements in the eastern part of the city—including the Little Hands Child Care Center, Hiawatha Aquatic Park, Fisher Community Center, Hiawatha Middle School, Maple Heights Nursing Home and the Hiawatha High School.

Ladner said the proposed project has come this far through the hard work and dedication of several community members that have met over the past two years attempting to identify the best way to bring new and better walking and biking alternatives to the community.

The mission of the Sunflower Foundation, created in 2000, is to serve as a catalyst for improving the health of Kansans, which it supports through a program of grants, awards and related activities.
