This week is National Library Week, and the Falls City Library and Arts Center is marking a milestone. It’s been five years since the Falls City Library moved to its present location at 1400 Stone Street, having moved into the new building in January 2007. Activities are planned to celebrate the anniversary.
The Falls City Library is more than just a “Library” in the traditional sense. As Library Director Hope Schawang says, it’s also become the Arts Center of the community – thanks largely to a donation from Merle Stalder and his late wife Marcia, creating the Stalder Gallery. (play audio :31)
The Sheldon Statewide exhibit, titled “Commemorations,” will open in the Stalder Gallery on Tuesday, with a Gallery Talk scheduled later this month.
Also on Tuesday, from 10:30 a.m. till noon, Children’s Librarian Dianne Hinz will lead adults in trying out some of the new gaming equipment donated by the Friends of the Library. Schawang says the Library has also become a popular place for local youth. (play audio :37)
A reception to honor the first five years in the new building is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday evening. Library Board members Tim Heckenlively, Sandra Hartman, Kim Oliver, Mimi Santo, and Mike Dougherty will host the open house. (play audio :26)
The Falls City Library and Arts Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. till noon on Saturday. Schawang hopes to be able someday to increase the Library staff and expand the number of hours the Library is open to the public.
