It was a busy weekend in Humboldt.  In addition to the Memorial Day observance and alumni reunions, the town celebrated the 100th anniversary of one historic structure and continued efforts to renovate another.
The city and Humboldt Chamber of Commerce hosted a program in the Square Park Friday evening to mark the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the bandstand, located in the center of the park.
The program included a few short speeches and a concert by the Happy Czechs.  Librarian Jorene Herr gave a brief history of the bandstand.  The structure was dedicated June 15, 1912, in memory of O.J. Tinker, who gave the land for the park.  The bandstand was nearly razed in the 1950s, and it recently had a new roof installed thanks to donations from the Humboldt Rotary Club.
And while Humboldt marked the bandstand’s 100th anniversary, efforts are continuing to renovate the Humboldt Auditorium.  A barbecue dinner was held at the Fire Hall Friday evening to raise money for the ongoing work.
Barb Gould has been spearheading the effort, along with Friends of the Auditorium and the Auditorium Board.  She says they were hoping to bring in six thousand dollars Friday to cover the architect’s fees.  (Play audio :13)
The architect will determine the next steps in the renovation process.  That could include plumbing, electrical work, or handicap accessibility.  And Gould says there are issues with the roof.  (play audio  :12)
Gould says there’s excitement building about the Auditorium renovation, even among the town’s younger residents, as highlighted by the Boy Scouts who helped clean the building for the weekend.  (play audio  :21)
New energy-efficient windows have been installed as the first part of the Auditorium renovation.  The Auditorium hosted two class reunions over the weekend.
