Two Marshall County bridges will now each bear the name of two Marysville area soldiers killed in Vietnam.
That comes as Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signs into law House Bill 2757, approved by the Legislature, which allows the special designation. Passage, and approval, now means that bridge number 60, on U.S. Highway 77, is renamed as the Specialist 4 Michael T. Martin Memorial Bridge. Martin's sister-in-law is Representative Sharon Schwartz, of Washington, Kansas who also serves as a representative of American Legion Riders Post#163 in Marysville. She provided testimony, during the now concluded Legislative Session, in support of the bill, and tells us that her testimony was given in terms of all veterans(Play Audio) Additionally, Bridge number 54, on U.S. Highway 36, is now designated as the Sergeant Joseph A.. Zutterman, Junior, Memorial Bridge. Zutterman, a member of the United States Marine Corp, died April 20th, 1968, at the age of 23, when the helicopter he was in crashed in South Vietnam. Funding is now needed for signage on the bridges, which both stand near Marysville. A ceremonial signing is set for Friday morning at 9:00 in the Governor's office in Topeka.
