Local Businesses Among State Award Winners

Twenty-two Regional Business Excellence Award winners, and ninety-seven Merit Award winners are announced by the Kansas Department of Commerce, with many from the local area. 

The announcement comes as part of Business Appreciation Month, which is the Department's annual celebration of Kansas businesses and the contributions they make to their communities and the state economy. 

The 119 businesses were nominated in one of four categories: manufacturing/distributing, service, retail and hospital/non-profit. 

Locally, Atchison based MGP Ingredients, Inc. earns a Business Excellence Award in the manufacturing/distribution division, while Mutual Savings Association FSA, of Leavenworth County, earns the same honor but in the retail division.  

Among the local Merit Award winners are  Crosswind Industries, Eric C. McPeak, OD, Hiawatha Implement, and Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, all based in the Brown County community of Hiawatha. 

Atchison Community Health Clinic and Lopez de Mexico Mexican restaurant, both located in the City of Atchison, in Atchison County.  

James Taylor Lansing Memorial VFW Post 12003, and Smith Chiropractic, both in Leavenworth County. 

Onaga Country Market and R-Tech Tool and Machine Inc., both located in Pottawatomie County.  

The Wagon Wheel Cafe in the Marshall County community of Marysville. 

No local business was named among the six finalists now competing for the Governor's Award of Excellence, the top business award, to be announced June 12th in Manhattan.
