Deadline for Grasshopper Creek Funding Approaches Cutoff for National Water Quality Initiative Funding is June 15
The sign-up deadline for the Grasshopper Creek National Water Quality Initiative program is June 15th. The Initiative provides nearly $300,000 for conservation work completed within the Grasshopper Creek watershed area, which is located west and north of the city of Horton and east and south of Powhattan (see map). The watershed (which is approximately 22,000 acres in size) lies primarily in Brown County with small portions also located in northeast Jackson and northwest Atchison Counties.
Conservation practices eligible for the program include terraces, waterways, cover crops, grade stabilization structures, and many others. The purpose of the NWQI is to improve water quality by reducing sediment and excessive nutrients in runoff. Agricultural producers in the Grasshopper Creek area with resource concerns should contact their NRSC office immediately for assistance.
Funding for the program is provided through the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Applications for approved practices do not need to compete with applications for available EQIP funding from other regions of the state. However, to be considered for this year’s funding, applications must be turned in to the NRCS field office by the June 15 cutoff.
For more information, call the Brown Co. NRCS office at 785-742-2012 or Delaware River WRAPS at 785-284-3422.
