Rabies On Rise; Vaccine Offered Saturday in Holton

Animal experts, along with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, continue to monitor rabies cases in the state, following recent findings that the disease is on the rise.
In Jackson County, two rabies infected dogs had to be destroyed, following an attack by a rabid skunk in the northern portion of the county.
Betty Flemming, volunteer co-director of the Heart of Jackson Humane Society calls that incident a tragedy(Play Audio)
The vaccine will be made available during a clinic Saturday, held by the Heart of Jackson shelter, from 11 until 1:00(Play Audio)
At the same time that the vaccinations are offered, animal micro-chipping will also be available at the shelter, located at 414 East 8th Street, in Holton(Play Audio)
Since 2007, an average of 68 animal rabies cases have been reported each year statewide.
The high number discovered in recent months led to warnings from KDHE for animal owners to take proper precautions against potential infections.
