Extreme heat dominates the region, and that leads to the issuance of an excessive heat warning until 8:00 Friday night. The Brown County Sheriff's office is doing their part to provide some relief from the sweltering temperatures.
Until further notice, the basement of the Brown County Jail will be made available for those seeking shelter from the heat, with that location serving as a cooling off point for those who might otherwise have no way to cool down.
Meanwhile, the excessive heat, bringing temperatures well above 100, means safety concerns for those who can't necessarily fend for themselves.
That includes the youngest among us, with Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services Secretary Phyllis Gilmore saying that parents must be aware of the dangers the weather brings for children(Play Audio)

Smith says making sure our pets are properly hydrated during days of extreme heat is a must, and creative methods can make certain they're getting the water they need(Play Audio)
The needs of the elderly must also be taken into consideration, with authorities saying those who live alone should be checked on regularly, or taken to a family member's home to avoid any heat related illness.
Also, due to the extreme heat, local electric cooperatives across the region are asking customers to limit electric usage during the peak hours of 3 to 9:00 pm.
Recommended methods are to set the thermostat a few degrees higher when away from home, and wait to do laundry and run diswashers until after 9 pm.
