Advice for Cattle Producers Facing Drought Conditions
With the dry conditions in place throughout the region, cattle producers are looking for ways to manage cattle differently to extend the life of pastures. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension beef range systems specialist Aaron Stalker says the first thing to consider is early weaning. (play audio :20 “of grazed forages.”)
Some producers may consider using creep feeds, but Stalker does not recommend this strategy in drought situations where forage is limited. (play audio :25 “their mothers.”)
Due to the dry conditions, pastures have lower quantity and quality of grass. Whether one should use a supplement, Stalker says, depends on the calving date. (play audio :17 “increase their intake.”)
Producers may need to look into alternative feeds as pastures have been less productive this year, and Stalker says mixing wet distillers grains with low quality forages is a viable option. (play audio :25 “a lot longer.”)
