Local Mayors Ask Brown Co. To Drop Labor Charge

( KNZA )--Hiawatha and Horton mayor’s say they want to be treated like other communities in the county who are not charged labor when county crews chip and seal their streets.
Hiawatha Mayor Crosby Gernon and Horton Mayor Tim Lentz made the request to Brown County Commissioners today ( Tuesday ).
Gernon said consideration should be given for the revenue the two cities are putting into county coffers....( play audio )
To try to save everyone money, county commissioner Warren Ploeger said the three entities agreed about 18 years ago to have county crews do the work instead of each having their own equipment....( continue audio )
Hiawatha and Horton are currently charged about $480 an hour for labor and equipment by the county for chip and sealing of their streets. Hiawatha was charged more than 55-hundred dollars this year, while Horton’s labor bill was about 17-hundred.
County commissioner Steve Roberts said he feels county road employees should be paid by Hiawatha and Horton when they are working on their city streets.
Lentz asked commissioners if they would be at least willing to consider dropping the equipment charge.
Roberts and Ploeger indicated they would be open to the idea.
County commissioners made no decision on the labor charge, saying they plan to discuss the matter further at a future meeting.
