( KNZA )--A vacancy has been filled on the Hiawatha City Commission.
The commission voted Monday evening to appoint Irvin Schwalm to fill the unexpired term of Vicki Denton as commissioner of streets and parks.
The commission accepted Denton’s letter of resignation at last week’s meeting, which was effective immediately.
Following his appointment, Schwalm was sworn into office by City Clerk Vivian Constable and took his seat on the commission.
Schwalm, a retired veterinarian who has lived in Hiawatha since 1959, was among four candidates who applied to fill the position. He previously served on the hospital board for 7 years and school board for 4 years.
The other three candidates included Thor Brown, Fonda Lafrenz and Tony Hull.
The commission made the decision after hearing from each of the candidates.
Mayor Crosby Gernon said he thought they had four good candidates and it was not an easy choice.
The position will be up for election next April.
