(KMZA)--A bill payment scam reported this month to Nemaha-Marshall Electric could be more far reaching, potentially affecting customers of any electricity provider.
It works like this: a caller tells the customer reached by phone that President Obama will help pay energy bills under a special federal program if they provide personal information. The caller apparently is attempting to gain the would be victim's bank account routing number and Social Security number.
Nemaha-Marshall Electric is reminding its customers that calls, involving personal information, will never be made, having been collected at the time the customer signed on for service.
Area residents are reminded to never provide personal information over the phone to any unsolicited caller. If there is reason to believe any call, involving a known business, may be legitimate, provide nothing to the caller. Instead, hang up and contact the company directly to avoid becoming a victim.
