Highland Food Pantry Relocating
09/25/2012

( KNZA )-- The Help Your Neighbor West Food Pantry in Highland will be moving to a new location.

Highland Pride President and Food Pantry Co-Chairperson Marian Thompson told the Doniphan County Commission Monday that the current location, owned by the city of Highland, is in need of repair and the city doesn’t intend to expend any further funding on the building.  As a result, she said the food pantry, which serves 200 patrons a month, is in need of a new location.  In addition, Thompson asked the commission to consider paying the cost of the monthly utilities.

Commissioners voted to allow the food pantry to re-locate to the basement of the Highland Senior Citizens Center and to pay the monthly utility costs associated with operation of the food pantry.

County Aging Administrator Julie Simmons voiced no objection.

In other business, the commission voted to enter into a contract for the purchase of about two acres for the extension of Runnymede Road south to U.S. 36 Highway.  The tract of land will be purchased for $50,000.

Commissioners say the extension of the road will extend the lifespan of the two bridges located on the east and west end of 190th Road, projected to cost nearly $187,000 to replace.
