Holton Residents Injured Following Pursuit
10/01/2012

(KNZA)--Injuries are suffered by two Holton residents when the car they were traveling in crashed after an alleged attempt to flee from a Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy.

Sheriff Tim Morse says it happened just minutes before 2:00 Saturday morning when the deputy tried to stop the 1999 Chevy car after the driver, 30-year-old Corey Mellenbruch,  allegedly committed a number of traffic infractions while driving in Netawaka.

According to Morse, Mellenbruch pulled over, but then thought otherwise, speeding away into a field and then westbound on 302 Road and Highway 75.

Then, about a hundred yards west of the highway, on 302 Road, the vehicle crashed, with Mellenbruch fleeing from the wreckage into a nearby field.

He was located a short time later as two local residents helped deputies search for him. Once apprehended, Mellenbruch, and his 23-year-old passenger, Kendra Thompson, were both transported by Jackson County EMS to Topeka hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Area fire departments were also on the scene, offering assistance following the crash.

Morse says the investigation as to whether alcohol played a role in the incident is continuing.
